We are your local Church of England (Anglican) church, part of Jesmond life since 1888, with a congregation from the locality, the city and the region. We aim to be friendly, diverse and to welcome all in Christ’s name. Our worship is inclusive and in the catholic tradition, with high quality music.

Story

St. George’s Church in Jesmond has been part of the local landscape since 1888 –a Grade I listed distinctive Arts and Crafts gift from local shipbuilder Charles Mitchell. The neighbouring Grade II Church Hall was funded by local parishioners. The Green, which links the two buildings, was later purchased through further community support.

Today, the church, hall, and surrounding grounds are well-used and valued by the local community – but their facilities no longer meet modern needs. Our major improvement project aims to create a Community Hub in the heart of Jesmond, including an extension to the church, a full refurbishment of the Church Hall, and improvements to the parking and the Green.

Phase 1 fundraising:

We have now formally raised £400,621 through donations, events, grants or via PCC commitment of funds and we are now applying to the largest trusts for comparable grants to complete the Church Extension. Community engagement is still vital if we are going to succeed in this exciting venture, so if you can help we would love to hear from you. For details of the Church Extension, please click here.

Phase 2 fundraising:

Launched on 31st May 2025, focusing on the renovation of the Grade II listed hall (for details click here) to form a new Community Hall including:

• A fully refurbished, modern interior with updated facilities

• Two new halls and an upstairs room, each with independent access to shared amenities

• Improved sound insulation

• A larger, staircase accessible upper floor

• WiFi and modern IT infrastructure

• Energy efficient heating and lighting

• A new external link to the Green
