Due to the cost of living crisis, we are receiving multiple calls a day from horse & pony owners who can no longer afford to keep them. We are taking in new rescues who would sadly otherwise be euthanized &are raising the funds needed for their care.

Story

With more and more old horses, young colts and numerous other unwanted animals pouring through our gates, we are having to launch our Autumn Appeal.

We would firstly like to extend a huge Thank You to everyone who supported us via our recent Vet Bill fundraiser. We cannot express how much your continued support means to the whole Woodfield Team.

With the cost of living continuing to rise, we have seen the most dramatic increase in people asking us to take in their horses.

With feed, vet and farrier bills increasing more and more, many of these horses are heartbreakingly seen as too expensive to justify 'keeping' in their old age. Many have worked their entire lives but are not afforded any form of a retirement.

We are hoping to raise these urgent funds needed to cover the costs required to provide these 'Golden Oldies' with the warm, safe home they deserve to have for the rest of their days.

With so many more rescued ponies here than ever before & with feed, vet, farrier and general living costs (such as bedding & medication) to cover, we hope we can raise these urgent funds as soon as possible.

Over the last nine years we have taken in well over 50 horses and ponies who were deemed 'non performers'. Horses and ponies that have worked hard their entire lives - hours and hours of hard work and years of service, yet denied the retirement they deserve.

This is where we come in!

At Woodfield we believe these horses and ponies deserve to live out their twilight years with a dignified retirement - with warm stables, proper feed & most of all, lots of love and care from our dedicated team.

This year (2022) we have taken into our care more oldies, more rescued colts and more mares with foals than ever before, destined to go to slaughter or be put to sleep. We have also seen some of the most emaciated cases than ever before .

With winter fast approaching we are hoping to raise these urgent funds, before we hit the harsher winter months ahead.

If you have ever visited us at the sanctuary or follow us online, you will have noticed we have groups of older horses who have bonded since being with us at the sanctuary, as well as those who came into the sanctuary together. Many of those horses are well into their 40s and some with very few teeth left!

You will find these beautiful older horses munching away on their buckets of delicious mash, which we place all over the yard for them to explore and find. Having formed strong bonds we never see them fight over feed, but calmly eating alongside their chosen companions.

All of these oldies are 100% sound, so to have allowed their previous owners to put them to sleep would have been unbearable. This year we face more and more of these terrible phone calls every day, with these heartbreaking stories.

We still have some of our youngest colts waiting to be castrated, at a cost of £200 per colt plus an extra £25 for a micro chip and even more for a passport which is now a legal requirement.

Please know if you chose to support our work and make a donation, no amount is ever too small! Every single penny goes directly to our animal's care and every donation is so gratefully received!

Your ongoing support, at a time of uncertainty for everyone, is so incredibly moving! Not only does your support allow us to continue providing the very best of care to the animals already at Woodfield, but also to the animals that are desperately waiting to come in.

These ponies and other animals come into our care with no financial assistance whatsoever! Whilst the financial impact is huge, we are often a 'last chance' for these animals and providing that to them is of the utmost importance to us. With your help, we can continue to provide a safe haven for these beautiful animals.

Please do share our latest fundraiser with your friends and family! Sharing our story helps us in reaching a wider audience and spreading the word about the important work we do here at Woodfield.

Thank you so much,

Love, Team Woodfield.

About the charity

In 2013 we moved to Gower to retire but after seeing so many abandoned and emaciated ponies we turned our home into a Sanctuary for them as a “save haven” to be cared for and rehabilitated. We have rescued over 300 animals, only accomplishing this with the generosity of our wonderful supporters.
