Story

Venturer Camp is a youth camp organised by a team of young volunteers for their younger peers. This summer, 400 young Venturers (13-17-year-olds) will spend a week camping, learning, and adventuring at Woodcraft Folk’s wonderful campsite, Biblins. Find out more on our website: venturercamp.org.uk

Why a Venturer Camp in 2023?

We last held Venturer Camp before the pandemic in 2019, so this year we’re extending the age range to allow those who missed out to have a Venturer Camp Experience. Young people have lost a lot in the last four years - camps like this are now even more important.

It was the best week of my life.” (Venturer Camp 2019 attendee)

Since 2019, many young people have been unable to explore or learn about the great outdoors. Because of this, we have seen more young people seek mental health support (NHS Digital 2022 reports a 77% increase in demand). The pandemic, cost of living and job insecurity have all contributed to a situation where many families cannot budget for play, adventures or outdoor education.

We need your help

We need to bring down the costs for campers and reduce financial barriers to attending. With your support, we can ensure Venturer Camp is open and inclusive to all young people, regardless of their background or financial situation, giving them an opportunity to:

- Make new friends and connections with young people from across the UK

- Develop their resilience and team working through adventurous activities

- Learn about issues that affect them and those around them and how to take action in their local communities in our activism centre

- Improve their independence as they contributing to meal preparation and looking after the environment in and around the campsite

- Have fun exploring the great outdoors!

My highlight was Venturers exploring the whole site day and night, having a really wide variety of experiences and meeting a wide range of people.” (Woodcraft Folk camp volunteer)

We need donations to ensure no young person is prevented from attending the event. You could help fund:

- £15 to fund one camper’s food for a day

- £25 to support one menstruating camper

- £35 to provide a sleeping bag to one camper

- £45 to provide one volunteer with Outdoor First Aid training

- £70 to meet the cost of a return train ticket from London

- £110 to provide a full body harness to support disabled campers to participate in climbing activities

I have really beautiful memories and I’m glad we could be there.” (14-year-old Woodcraft Folk camp attendee)

About Woodcraft Folk

We are Woodcraft Folk and we are youth led. We support young people to participate, take the lead, and make decisions about their programme and how the organisation is run. We empower them to become active citizens locally and globally. Through our camps, activities and outings we help children and young people to understand important issues about the world: the environment, world debt, global conflict and sustainable development. The work we do supports our young members to build a peaceful, fairer world, and to develop their own ideas, their self-confidence and their skills.
