Story
Ward 26 at Heartlands hospital, Birmingham is home to the West Midlands Adult Cystic Fibrosis Centre. Our unit provides treatment for many hundreds of young patients with cystic fibrosis aged 16 and over, having recurring lung infections and other complications such as diabetes, respiratory and liver failure. All our patients require protection from cross-infection and, those who are critically ill, often spend weeks or months in hospital being sadly where many spend their final days.
After 18 years of intensive use our rooms are tired and worn and in need of refurbishment, but the NHS is unable to fund most of the necessary improvements. So far, our charity has managed to refurbish 11 rooms but needs to raise a further £180,000 to complete this project. The new rooms are 'homely' helping patients feel more relaxed, the nature themed decor and vital links with the 'outside world' all help towards relieving depression and social isolation.
One of our patients, Tim Hughes, had kindly chosen to help fundraise by running the .Warwickshire Bear Ultra but sadly this has been cancelled due to Covid restrictions. However, undeterred Tim is now running the Virtual London Marathon on 4th October 2020.
To follow Tim please go to www.facebook.com, search 'Tim the CF Runner' and like his page.
