Story

Throughout the refugee camps of Lebanon, thousands of young women and girls are faced with precarious sanitary conditions and environmental hazards. Due to a lack of resources, many of these women and girls have neither the knowledge nor supplies to practice proper sanitation and hygiene, putting them at risk for health issues and often preventing them from fully participating in activities like school and work. Menstrual health and hygiene are necessary for these women and girls to lead healthy and active lives, and will allow them to share this knowledge with generations to come.

Represnatives will be visiting Lebanon in early April 2019. All donations go towards the purchase of the packs. The pack includes: sanitary towels, scissors, nail clippers, tweezers, hairbands, knit comb, razors, creams, toothbrush and toothpaste - and costs only £15.

The project partner on the ground, Anera, in partnership with UNICEF, aims at mobilizing these communities and sensitizing them to the personal risks related to improper sanitation and hygiene practices, with a focus on menstrual hygiene for women and girls. The proposed intervention will contribute to enhancing health outcomes for Palestinian and Syrian refugee children by improving Solid Waste Management (SWM) systems and hygiene and sanitation awareness in three prime locations, and by meeting UNICEFs Child Survival sub-objective of safe access to WASH (Water and Sanitation for Health) in emergency settings.

An estimated 1,300 individuals will benefit from these activities, which will be conducted over approximately 5 months during the project period.

In order to equip these women and girls with the necessary provisions to actually carry out safe menstrual hygiene practices promoted during the awareness sessions, we are seeking support through the donation of sanitary pads with or without feminine wash, in order to help improve the menstrual hygiene practices of vulnerable women and girls and enhance their health outcomes. The special needs of women and girls are all too often overlooked in overpopulated and isolated Palestinian refugee camps. For thousands, menstruation is a burden and disrupts girls to actively participate in school activities and women to attend their workplace. Providing women and girls with sanitary pads will not only incentivize them to improve their menstrual hygiene practices but as importantly, to attend the much needed awareness sessions that will focus on empowering the women and girls to become key influencers and peer advisors in their communities.

Needs are estimated to be 4000 packs of sanitary pads best to be received by April 2019.
