Story
Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust
Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust (YDMT) exists to protect, restore, and celebrate some of the most special landscapes in the UK and to make sure people and nature can thrive together. Our work is rooted in the belief that caring for nature at a local level creates lasting benefits for wildlife, communities, and future generations.

YDMT delivers practical, on-the-ground conservation: restoring habitats, protecting wildlife, improving access to nature, and supporting resilient, sustainable communities.
“We’ve seen a massive increase in biodiversity since planting the woodland. The sporadic planting and shelter provided by the trees has helped many plant species become established and with this a huge increase in insects, birds, and small mammals.” Mark, Land Owner.
From planting trees and restoring peatlands to helping people reconnect with the outdoors, our projects tackle climate change, biodiversity loss, and wellbeing hand in hand.
“Life can be a bit much sometimes. I get nervous and I overcompensate. The Green Futures Youth Outreach Project has helped me to learn about myself and I have learnt to calm down and feel more comfortable in groups.” Anon
Our Impact
Our impact goes beyond the landscape itself. By working with local people, landowners, volunteers, and young people, we empower communities to take pride in their environment and play an active role in protecting it. We provide pathways for young people to embark on rural careers and provide them with the skills and confidence to champion the Dales and the planet, now and for the future.
In practical terms this means that in 2024/25 we have:
- made 3,692 connections with people who benefit from our diverse projects
- delivered 2,735 hours of conservation work enabling people to take action for nature
- restored 35.8 hectares of wildflower meadows at 24 sites
- planted 147,778 native broadleaf trees and hedgerows
- granted £248,156 to 51 community projects through the YDMT grants scheme.
When people feel connected to nature, they are more likely to care for it, and for each other. YDMT’s work proves that meaningful environmental change starts locally, but its benefits are felt far wider.
