Isabella is one of the 70% of students from York St John from less advantaged backgrounds. We need your help to ensure these students are continuing to get the support that they need.
“With my scholarship, I have been able to ensure that travel to campus has been covered, year-round. I do not live in York as I cannot access accommodation there. In addition to this, I have been able to purchase more resources to help with my learning and personal development, which has enabled me to look further into the future at my career prospects. I am looking to become a social worker and am currently undertaking work experience to achieve that.”
Last academic year, we had to turn down 63% of applicants due to a lack of funds. In August 2024, a YSJ team made up of students, staff and alumni ran the York 10k and raised an incredible £1,661 to support our students in need.
This academic year, demand is higher than ever. Although we were able to award 14 scholarships, 4 more than the last, the number of applicants we had to turn away increased to 71%.
“It has been a lifeline for my university experience and has enabled me to achieve far more than I would have expected. I feel that I would have been in a position where I was choosing between living and studying, and no student deserves to be in that position.”
