Story
The refugee crisis in Greece has long been off our media. But the eastern Aegean islands are at breaking point. 5 of the Dodekanese islands which saw the most arrivals of refugees had "hotspot" camps constucted and opened last year, which were designed to offer short term accomodation. However, for many residents, due to painfully slow asylum procedures, these have become more long term residences. The conditions in these camps are grim and many volunteers working in the field say its the worst they have seen for a while.
Arrivals of refugees have significantly increased over the last few months, with the majority of new arrivals coming from Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan via Turkey, and due to this, all of the 5 main hotspot camps are running substantially over capacity. The population of the Vial camp in Chios is over double the camps capacity.
Many of the people arriving, do with little other than the clothes on their backs. We want to make a difference to the families and children in Chios, and are looking to fund 1000 pairs of underwear for children, that our partners at The Unmentionables will distribute.
