Story

For the full story, click here

Macdesa is a small Fairtrade mining community of 300 people (including 100 children) that gained accreditation in May 2015.  They depend on mining for their income and have worked very hard over the last 2 years to join the Fairtrade family.

At about 1pm on Sat 4th July 2015 a fire spread uncontrollably throughout the village.  Since it was a rest day, homes were promptly evacuated, but up to 90% of their homes and buildings have been razed to the ground.

Whilst the mine and machinery were not damaged, production and income will now dramatically decrease as they try to rebuild.  Miners receive $2 per gram of gold as an additional Fairtrade Premium to improve community health and education, but this disaster has wrought huge unexpected losses for those already battling poverty.

For the sake of their children, the community would like to rebuild and restore their School, so 100% of donated funds will go directly to #helpmacdesa do just that.
