To build a modern Dog Rescue Centre

We want to build a centre where dogs who have been lost or abandoned and are due to be euthanised in local pounds are given a second chance at life. We have to raise all funds ourselves.

Story

We are a group of volunteers who have been saving dogs lives and finding them loving forever homes for almost 12 years. Over the last 5 years alone we have helped save the lives of over 3,000 dogs – dogs who are now part of loving families.  The cost of this however has risen steeply over the years and kenneling is one of our main costs.  We are working at an unsustainable pace.

Our own premises is a must - at the moment we have limited access to our dogs, no central point for volunteers, nowhere for members of the public to visit.

We want to build modern, hygienic kennels and provide a stimulating environment for the dogs in our care, as we work to find them homes. We are creating an isolation block and puppy rooms which will help us to give the best care possible to our most vulnerable dogs. We will also have an area we can utilise for fundraising activities and members of the public to visit.

When we were set up 73% of all dogs going into our local pound did not come out alive. Through the hard work of our dedicated volunteers this has now dropped to 9%. We want to reduce this even further but to do this we need a premises. Over the last 12 years over 100,000 dogs have been "put to sleep" in pounds in Ireland. This statistic is shocking. Our centre, as well as saving dogs lives, will welcome school groups and promote responsible dog ownership. We believe education and awareness are the ways to change this upsetting trend. Unfortunately there are no Government grants available to us to do this work - but we believe it's important work and are therefore rising to the challenge. We need help from like-minded people to get this project off the ground.

About the charity

DDR is an entirely voluntary, non-profit organisation set up in 2005 by a group of ordinary, like-minded people. Our aim is to do whatever is possible to rescue unwanted dogs from our local dog pounds and give them a second chance at life. Over the last 5 years alone we have helped save the lives of over 3,000 dogs.
