Story
On Tuesday 5th December, Firefly held a Christmas Event in St Andrews Square. It was a hugely successful evening event designed to celebrate and raise awareness of Firefly International - a Scottish charity supporting young people living in areas that have been affected by war and confict, including Syria and Bosnia.
Firefly supports locally‐led projects in conflict and post-conflict regions that create safe, supportive and inclusive spaces for young people to learn, thrive and grow.
Over the past 2 years, Firefly has been doing its utmost to support Syrian refugees in different ways. Now we have taken a further step forward by helping a group of refugees to design, fund and set-up a youth education centre in Antakya, Turkey. Antakya is a city of one million with 200,000 refugees. Many Syrian families are living in very basic accommodation and there are only limited school places open to Syrian children. Many youth have had no educational opportunities since leaving Syria and have to work in the streets to help raise money for rents, sorting rubbish or working in the markets. The initial focus of the centre will be on reintegrating working refugee children back into school through fun after-work activities. From there we hope to increase the overall educational offering as we continue to raise more funds.
Your valuable support ensures we can continue our important work with these children and their families.
Thank you.
