Story

Currently 92% of surgical need in Sierra Leone goes unmet and patients die for lack of access to simple operations. Those living in the capital Freetown are 30 times more likely to get access to essential surgery than people living in hard to reach areas such as Bonthe. The island is home to 60,000 people many of whom do not survive the long journey to hospital on the main land should they require lifesaving surgery. David Kain was born and educated on Sherbro (Bonthe) Island, Sierra Leone. He qualified as a Community Health Office in 2011 and then went on to train as a surgeon. He has just graduated and has been placed by the government back to his childhood home. David is trained to perform essential and life-saving surgery and with his appointment at last the Sherbro people on Bonthe Island have the chance to receive timely treatment locally. We hope to equip Bonthe's tiny hospital with the essential lifesaving equipment necessary for him to do his job. The need could not be greater.
