Story
There were 36,465 asylum seekers in 2016, many having fled civil wars and repression where serious human rights violations are commonplace. Many were tortured; estimates are that +1/3 asylum seekers experienced torture or extreme violence. These are among the UK’s most vulnerable.REDRESS has learnt in its 25 years’ experience, the sense of injustice that accompanies torture and the typical absence of acknowledgement of the crime serves as a key barrier inhibiting survivors' from re-establishing control over their lives.
Torture survivors are 4 times more likely to suffer from PTSD than other refugees and 2.5 times more likely to suffer from depression, impeding integration. They are routinely without information on how to access justice in their home countries and internationally, whilst those who torture are seldom held accountable.
We rely on funding from generous people like yourself to help torture survivors to seek the justice they deserve.
