Launched in 1869, Cutty Sark was celebrated for her famous 19th century design, enabling her to break records for speed, size and sail strength, the unique streamlined shame of her hull and iron frame created more space for cargo. When we imagine a sailing ship in all her glory, it is the image of the elegant clipper that is likely to be visualised.

Whilst intended for only 30 years of service, Cutty Sark has survived 148 years, 2 World Wars and a great fire in 2007. She has been re-purposed on several occasions; from tea clipper to wool shipper, from training Navy cadets to standing today as a proud memorial to the Merchant Navy.

A fine example of innovation in the 19th century as well as today, the Grade I listed vessel became the largest object in RMG's collection in 2016 as we took on the responsibility of her care and conservation.

A true survivor of the seas - having braved storms, the perilous waters of Cape Horn, war, fire, murder and mutiny - she continues to tell stories of life on board through educational activities for schools and an expanding programme of family events. 

As a nation we are fortunate to have such a diverse historic landscape made up of palaces, castles, cathedrals and houses, but in addition, a variety of historic ships. Amongst these vessels, probably none have as many sea miles as Cutty Sark, so it remains a true national treasure, enriching London’s skyline as a glorious monument to the age of sail.

The work continues. The money raised by you by supporting Team Cutty Sark will go towards the ongoing preservation of the ship, ensuring a sustainable future as she looks towards the great milestone of 150 years in 2019. 

Her very essence of daring and adventure makes Cutty Sark the perfect inspiration to align the personal challenge of running the London Marathon. 

As her original owner, John ‘Jock’ Willis’s family motto fittingly displays on the  side of the ship - ‘Where there’s a Willis a way’.
