I've always watched the London Marathon on TV and thought it would be a great experience, but something I was incapable of. Over the summer it occured to me that the only thing stopping me was my attitude: as soon as I realised that, I had to give it a go. My friend Claire (justgiving.com/pleasesponsorclaire) and I are training four or five times a week, in the hope of making it over the finish line in one (or two!) pieces. 26.2 miles seems further and further every day.....
I've got a guaranteed place to run, but want to use the opportunity to raise some money for the Leukaemia Research Fund (LRF). I've spent a year working in a haematology department and have met a lot people who will benefit from the work carried out by the charity. Haematological malignancies seem to be particularly cruel, striking down those often in the prime of their life, with no warning. They often have a relapsing / remitting course which is very difficult for patients and their families to cope with. As far as we are aware, there aren't any risk factors for the development of these conditions - people "can't help it" if they are struck down. I've seen a lot of people survive haematological malignancies but unfortunately I've seen a lot of people die. I want to play my part in shifting the balance towards survival. The money that you donate is going directly to the Nottingham branch of LRF, and so will be used to help local people - patients who I've come to know over the past couple of years.
This website is recommended by the LRF, and provides a totally safe way of donating. If you are a tax payer please provide your FULL address, and Gift Aid will ensure that the government donates an ADDITIONAL 28% of your donation sum.
