Story

Weldmar Hospicecare                                                             Did you know that it currently costs over £8 million A YEAR for Weldmar to continue running? Only 25% of this amount is funded by the NHS, meaning the charity has to raise just over £6 million every single year.

What I'm doing... So I have never been outside of Europe, raised more than a few hundred pounds at any one time, and as a child who lived a 15 minute walk from town, on the way home I would stamp my feet & sit down on the pavement, refusing to walk any further & demanding to be carried. BUT, I have decided to travel 4,300 miles to trek through the Canadian Rockies & raise just under £4,000 for Weldmar before I go!

So, why? Why do I want to spend the next few months of my life organising events & fundraising? Why do I want to walk for miles, with my little legs going twice as fast as everyone else's just to keep up and probably gain more blisters in 7 days than I have had in my entire life?

My story... Well, 4 years ago my mum passed away at Weldmar Hospice, after being diagnosed with cancer 2 years earlier. She was only there for a very short period, but the care my mum, my family and I received at the hospice was truly AMAZING. My mum's babies (the famous sausage dogs) even got to pay her a final visit at the hospice! They could not do enough for us & made what was 100% the hardest days of my life, that tiny bit easier. Nothing could have ever prepared me for standing at my mum's bedside at just 20 years old & holding her hand as I watched her take her last breath. I have missed her every single day since & I know that there are so many times ahead of me that I'll need my Mum & it breaks my heart that she won't be there.

However, just like Mum, I have always had a 'glass half full' outlook on life, so have tried to turn my incredibly negative & sad experience into something positive. I am eternally grateful for what they did for us all & I will never be able to do enough to show my gratitude.... but I can try! I want to do anything I can for the hospice & for all future patients & their families, to hopefully make their time that little bit less difficult too. I have taken part in numerous Weldmar events and became a volunteer at the hospice in 2018... but now I face my biggest challenge yet!! Sadly cancer is something that will effect every single one of us at some point in our lives but Weldmar focus on making those final days the very best and comfortable they can possibly be.
