Story

Thank you fortaking the time to view my JustGiving page.

I have chosen to raise moneyfor MacMillan Cancer Support because on and off over the last three years my dadhas been fighting cancer.  I wantedto do something to raise money so MacMillan can continue to help other familiesgoing through similar situations to dad and my family. I decided to dedicate mysummer break from university to train for the London Olympic Triathlon.

In December 2007 he started tolose feeling in his right leg, to the point were it became numb, and when hegot it checked out he was soon diagnosed with a non-hodgkin’s lymphomatumor.  He soon started his longcourse of chemotherapy, which lasted 5 months, and then underwent radiotherapyto completely kill the tumor. During this time he became a lot weaker and couldn’t do all the thingshe used to do, but this didn’t stop him from at least trying.  He was given the all clear later in theyear and we were all very relieved once we had heard the news.  Unfortunately the cancer came back 6months later and this time it was in his neck, and instead of having the normalchemotherapy he had to go into hospital to an isolation room for just over amonth to undergo a stem cell transplant. This had a huge impact on Dad’s life as well as my family and his closefriends.  Everything happened soquickly but we were always so well informed and the nurses were always there toanswer my questions.

Update

In March of this year my dad once again diagnosed with a non-Hodgkin's lymphoma tumour, but this time it was unfortunately terminal.  Over Easter and the following weeks, he made the most of the time which he has left and did everything he possibly could.  My birthday was at the end of April and dad was still in good spirits especially at my party with family and friends; he even played 10 holes of golf on the Monday followed by a great boys lunch in the pub and somehow managed a full round with me on Tuesday, my actual birthday.  However, towards the end of the week he started to deteriorate quickly becoming increasingly sleepy.  On the Thursday morning the Macmillan nurse, Shaun, came for the first time - dad had been so busy doing all the things he wanted they hadn't met before then.  He was amazing and helped us through the last few tough days, helping to organise the district nurses and further help from Shipston Home Nursing as well as .  Unfortunately, he passed away in the early hours of the 5th May but he has left so many happy memories and we are fortunate to have enough lots of support from family and friends.

On the 8thAugust I am going to be swimming, cycling and running in the Mazda LondonOlympic Triathlon.  This involvesswimming 1.5km in the Royal Victoria Dock, cycling 40km and running 10kmthrough the streets of the capital. Iam raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support, who improve the lives of peopleaffected by cancer.  They providepractical, medical and financial support and push for better cancer care. Mostpeople will have been affected by cancer in some way, and I'm sure many of youwill already know about the great job Macmillan do, but if you would like tofind out more about them then visit http://www.macmillan.org.uk/.
