    Story

Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy is a fatal, genetic, life-limiting disorder affecting 1 in every 3,500 live male births (around 2,500 people have DMD in the UK at any one time). It results in progressive loss of strength and is caused by a mutation in the gene that encodes dystrophin. The result is loss of muscle use and eventually heart and lung failure. THERE IS NO CURE

In April 2016 it was suggested that our friend's little boy, Lucas, might have Muscular Dystrophy. Ten weeks later it was confirmed that he had the most common but also the most serious form, Duchenne. He had been a late walker, which had originally been put down to hyper mobile joints, but when he started to lag behind his peers with running, jumping, hopping, climbing, his parents suspected something more serious and sought further opinion. Never in their worst nightmares did they ever think their beautiful little boy had a terminal illness. Their world imploded.

All the dreams and ambitions that were had for Lucas have been cruelly destroyed with one swipe by this horrible disease which will probably see him in a wheelchair by 10, before his upper body will begin to shut down, then his heart and lungs begin to fail, almost certainly before he’s 30. The most difficult part – there is no cure, it will happen and his parents are powerless to protect him. So they will just have to make new dreams come true and ensure they give him, and Sophia, the best and happiest lives they possibly can.

Please donate whatever you can in support of Action Duchenne so they can continue their vital research into finding a cure for this illness.
Money is also being raised for Muscle Up for Lucas so Lucas can be provided with the best of everything he needs to enable him to manage his illness and live a happy life filled with wonderful memories.
