Story
'Open Stage' is an open access drama group made up of adults with learning disabilities, their families, carers and volunteers from the local community in Wordsley, Stourbridge, West Midlands.
Open Stage has been going for 21 years and over that time has worked with many local people. The group's ethos has always been to work with everyone who comes along regardless of their level of ability, using drama, art, dance and music. The group have performed at many local festivals over the years and meet each week to rehearse, have fun and socialise.
Chris Groucutt was a very important part of Open Stage for almost all of its 21 years existence. Chris came along to support Clive, the drama tutor, bringing his keyboard each week for many years. About ten years ago when the group faced closure Chris was very important in helping to save the group and set it up as a voluntary organisation, registering with Dudley Council for Voluntary Services. Chris has been the treasurer of Open Stage for the last ten years. The group is currently run by Anna Fuscoe our resident dance artist and choreographer supported by a group of volunteers and a group of about 20 members.
Chris, who had himself worked for many years as a community artist and musician, believed passionately in the group and everything it stood for. He believed that everyone, regardless of their level of ability, had the right to access the arts within their local community - he and his family have supported the group for all of this time. His daughter attended the group weekly and along with Chris took part in the Christmas performance in December 2016. The group have a great memory of Chris dressed as Father Christmas at this performance.
Open Stage are honoured and humbled to accept donations in Chris' memory. The group whole heartily thank Chris' family for this privilege.
