    Story

With the support of Crick Parish Council, Councillor Danny Tolfts is arranging to have a memorial erected in Crick to remember and honour those brave men who lost their lives in the Battle.

The memorial will be of a soldier standing with ‘arms reversed’ carved in oak on a stone plinth. The sculptor is Peter Leadbeater. Examples of his work can be seen at http://www.peterleadbeater.com/gallery/large-outdoor-sculptures/ and in the photo above.

It will be erected on land off Yelvertoft Road close to the all weather footpath near the Sports Field.

The memorial will cost about £2500. We are hoping that residents of Crick may wish to contribution to its cost. Any surplus funds will be donated to the Royal British Legion.

The Battle of the Somme was fought at such terrible cost that it has come to symbolise the tragic futility of the First World War. Its first day of conflict remains the bloodiest day in the history of the British Army and it was felt deeply at home, in particular in those towns and villages which had raised Pals battalions and suffered horrible losses.

Its 100th anniversary provides an opportunity to commemorate the Service and sacrifice of those who lost their lives in the battle, to reflect upon the human cost of conflict and to have hope for a more peaceful world.

Please give what you can as all donations however small will help fund this important project.

A big Thank You to everyone who has donated money for Crick's Somme 100 Memorial. The statue is being carved and the site is being prepared. With only 5 days to go before this site closes down, there is still time to make a donation. Thanks again. Best wishes, Brian.
