Story
This Just Giving page is being set up by the Descendants Youth Organisation based in Acton, London, UK. You can read about us at www.descendants.org.uk.
We are raising money to support the family of Disebo Mokhuane, a Descendants member in South Africa, and to demonstrate she was loved and appreciated.
Tragically Disebo died, along with her older sister, in a car accident in April 2024. The money is needed urgently and will help the family with the expenses of burying two young girls together and support them as they cope with their bereavement.
Disebo was a beautiful and delightful girl. Since Covid prevented us meeting, Descendants has been running weekly online sessions for children and young people. We cover educational and creative topics with an emphasis on African cultural heritage. We were fortunate enough to have partnered with the Marimba Melodika organisation in South Africa, and young people from South Africa began participating in our sessions alongside those from Acton and across the world. Disebo was one of the most active of the South African young people, and was seen as a friend by young people from the UK, the Caribbean and Africa. She was intelligent, hardworking, sometimes shy and giggly, and altogether delightful. When because of the time difference between the UK and South Africa it became unsafe for the young people to travel home in the dark at the end of the sessions, they did not give up. They arranged to go back to Disebo’s house with her and continued to participate from there. They did not have access to a computer or the internet, so they huddled around a mobile phone using just the screen, and later a small magnifying glass in front of it. We admired their spirit.
Please help us to honour Disebo, here and across the world.
Any contribution will be welcomed and appreciated, no matter how small.
