Story
Calderdale Council's Public Health Team are doing the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge on Saturday 19th May to raise money for a charity being set up to remember Nick Smith.
Nick's wife, Rachel, works in the Public Health Team. They have two young children - Hadyn, aged 5, and Georgia, aged 3. Rachel is part of the Team taking part in the Challenge.
Nick was an amazing man who was struck down by the cruellest of diseases – Motor Neurone Disease.
Diagnosed in September 2017 at the age of just 37, Nick died just 102 days after on 20 December 2017 - just two weeks on from his 38th birthday.
A legend of amateur rugby league, Nick played with Siddal ARLFC from the age of eight making 400 appearances for the team. He played professionally when younger with both Leeds Rhinos Academy and Sheffield Eagles before embarking on a career as an accountant.
The Nick Smith Foundation is in the process of being set up to ensure Nick’s legacy is one of continued support for research into MND - and support for those diagnosed and their families, support for young children who suffer bereavement with the death of a parent and support for the development of rugby league.
They are three causes we know Nick would have been passionate about.
We support them in his name, as his legacy.
