Weʼve raised £1,827 to support educational trips for primary school children in the summer term

    Story

Mr Gynn, Deputy Head at Chiltern Primary School, is running a marathon from the school to Marwell Zoo to raise money to help subsidise school trips in the Summer Term.

Or visit our website here .

We don’t want our pupils to miss out on a summer of educational activities because they don’t have the money or schools don’t have the funding.

The school serves a community that exhibits high social needs. There is high need for social services support. Unemployment, poor physical and mental health are some of the issues that the Buckskin ward experiences at higher levels than other areas in Basingstoke and Deane. There are proportionally more lone-parent households and residents not working due to long-term illness. There are over four times more households in Buckskin with limited resources budgeting just to make ends meet. The consequences for children living in households with these complex needs can be anything from lacking the focus to learn, limited uniform, difficulties forming friendships to classroom disruption, poor attendance, and poor mental and emotional health.

During lockdown the school supported nearly a quarter of the pupils with IT equipment and continued to provide breakfast cereal and bagels for every family.

Due to COVID restrictions, the school's PTA fundraising has fallen drastically. For over a year, we have had no school fetes, Christmas fairs, Discos, Movie nights, or bake sales. All of these normally raise funds to allow children to experience the world beyond their doorstep.

In a normal year, we visit Marwell Zoo. For some children, this will be the only time they visit a wildlife park.

We also visit the Tower Of London. For some children, this is their first time to the capital.

We also take a class to an outdoor activity centre where they learn to challenge themselves and support others.

We’ve worked hard to ensure our pupils have a rich and engaging curriculum. We don't want a global pandemic to stop that. Unfortunately, the school has faced increasing costs of cleaning supplies and safety equipment. This has again severely limited our ability to give children the experiences they desperately need after lockdown.

Parents and families have also faced hardships of reduced incomes through furlough or redundancy. Coronavirus has affected us all. We don’t want it to affect children any more than it has already.

To raise funds, our Deputy Head, Mr Gynn, is running the marathon distance from the school to the local zoo in one school day.

Is 12 weeks enough to train for a marathon?

With less only 12 weeks to prepare, you don't have the time to build up the stamina required to complete the marathon at a competitive, sustained pace. Your goal on race day should be to simply complete the miles, not to give Gebrselassie a run for his money. Instead, focus on training to a sustainable pace. - marathonhandbook.com

    This will be a challenge.

Took a run around the New Arlesford section of the route this evening. I was gobsmacked. It is absolutely magical around there. I wasn’t sure if I’d bump into a pheasant, Harry Potter or Bilbo Baggins. It made me more determined that every child should get to visit the most beautiful parts of our county no matter what their background.

On BBC Radio Berkshire, I spoke about starting running after my brother died of cancer. He was a member of newmarketjoggers.co.uk and the wonderful people there honoured him by naming an annual race the Marcus Gynn 10k. He missed his chance to run the London Marathon although he was issued a race number. I now have that race number tattooed on my calf. You can just see it in the bottom of this picture.

I’ve just got back from a test run of the first 4 miles of the route from School over the M3 to Farleigh Wallop. Good news is it took about half an hour 👍. Bad news is it’s all uphill 👎.
