My Daughter Kimberley is from Scotland and her husband Byron is from South Africa, After a whirlwind romance they got married and Kimberley moved to Bahrain to be with Byron. While there, Byron lost his job and their accommodation. Luckily he found another job in Oman, the move was pretty tough as Byron’s previous company didn’t pay his final salary or any money that he was owed, but, at the time it was not possible to move to the UK

The move to Oman was a promising fresh startt, initially things seemed to be going well. Then without warning Byron’s employer decided not to follow through on some of the promises and obligations they had made resulting in a huge financial strain on Byron & Kimberley. While people think life in the Middle East is high salaries and glamour those days have gone, especially with the drop in the price of oil. The sad reality is companies are cutting salaries which are not high by any means and the cost of living for expats is getting out of control. As the cost of everyday living and survival increases and salaries drop, you are even lucky to get your salary on time.

Kimberley and Byron are now trying to come home to the UK, but right now it looks almost impossible. Byron (as a South African) has a struggle getting into the UK, the visa will cost 3000 pounds plus the cost of travelling home. It simply doesn’t look like an achievable task for this young couple, who hope one day in the near future to start a family. Just managing to survive, and trying to keep on top of their ever increasing bills (if these fall behind travel bans can be incurred) is more than a struggle.
