Think Pacific Foundation (1162190) is a charity that strives to combat poverty issues in the Fiji Islands, through establishing better standards of education and a holistic approach to health. In Fiji, 75% of children live below the poverty line, with only 50% having access to adequate sanitation and water. Children in Fiji grow up in a world of limited education, basic knowledge and a severe lack of opportunity. 

In summer, I hope to travel to Fiji to assist with a project within a rural community. Schools in Fiji are grossly understaffed and severely lacking in basic materials. Our aim is to provide resources for classes and vital one to one support for children, while implementing a teacher training programme to ensure that the work we do is sustainable.

A further aspect of the project involves health promotion. Since 2009, Think Pacific Foundation has constructed 14 health clinics in rural areas, providing some of the first medical facilities for these communities. Providing education surrounding important health issues in Fiji - including the dangers of alcohol, tobacco and obesity, as well as the importance of oral hygiene - will be an essential aspect of my role on the project. I will also attempt to tackle misconceptions and fears surrounding healthcare that are sadly commonplace in Fiji’s rural communities. 

I hope to raise around £1000 for the charity, through a number of fundraising initiatives. The money raised will be used to support directly the rural community by supplying resources and implementing long term education initiatives for children and teachers, as well as facilitating my stay within the community.
