Story
It was diffcult decision but I did it... After working 10 years for my employer I decided to take a new challange and leave the job, so from middle of October I will become full time unemployed for the first time in my life :-)
Before starting a new chapter of my life and taking the new job I decided to do, what I have always dreamed of.... Travel and help at the same time......
I will spend 4 weeks in Kenya to take voluntary work in Milimani Academy. I will self fund my trip to Kenya and all the money raised will support Michael's and Jane's fantastic project. Every penny will make a difference in life of these children so let's help them to look for the brighter future. All funds donated will support Millimani Academy.
About Milimani Academy
Milimani Academy is situated in Kaswanga Village, Rusinga Island, on the shores of Lake Victoria, Kenya. This is a school that helps provide for the education and wellbeing of orphans and vulnerable children. The school has a total number of 65 children from different homes within the community who are orphans and vulnerable. The children learn at the school during the day and in the evening they go back to the care givers. Michael and Jane who are the directors of the school donated a piece of land for the construction of classrooms. They two are now retired and used their retirement benefits to construct makeshift structures where the children learn. The school has a total number of five teachers (four females and one male) and two cooks. The ages of the children range from 3 to 10 years. The school has no external funding and relies on the donations from well-wishers and volunteers.
The vision Milimani Academy is that the children and families whose lives we touch with care will realize their full potential and experience brighter tomorrow, in part due to the caring, nurturing and learning atmosphere of the Academy.
Mission statement
Our mission is to provide education, food, medical attention and other life changing necessities to children in desperate situations. We strive to break the cycle of poverty, abuse, ignorance and help children to become positive, productive and self-fulfilled members of the society with opportunity and hope for the future.
Objectives
To provide hope to the hopeless situations of the disadvantaged children in Rusinga by providing food, clothing, education and sanitation. To increase the level of literacy among children with the aim of expanding their opportunities for self-reliance by providing and promoting basic education. To safeguard the rights of orphans and vulnerable children against any form of violation. To provide orphans and vulnerable children with access to the basic human needs including food, healthcare, clothing and education.
Challenges
The school has been receiving many children over time and the funding has increasingly become a challenge. Some of these children come from poor families and only survive on one meal in a day (the one provided at the school) hence malnutrition.
Why they are asking for help
The school needs your financial support to help in paying teachers’ salaries, feeding program during school days, cooks salaries.

7 years agoDear friends!!! I want to say BIG BIG thank to all of you who contributed and supported me in collecting the funds for Milimani Academy. All together we manage to donate to the school £454.16 - £324.16 through Just Giving (amount after 5% fee that Just Giving takes) and £130 I received in cash from some of you. This amount gave us 60,750 Kenyan shillings. Money was spend for teachers salaries, uniforms for some children, books, chairs and tables, feeding program for January. It's worth to help others. 7 years ago2 days to go! Thank you so much to everyone who supported Milimani Academy. I'm here since last Wednesday- kids are great, energetic, funny but luck of funds is visible in the school. I already discussed with the school director what are the money going to be spend on: we will buy plastic chairs and tables, text books for next year, stationaries, some money will go towards teachers salaries as school is behind, feeding program and if anything left will be spend on school uniforms for the most needed children. Thank you! You are amazing!
