Mental health is just as important as our physical health but yet there is a lot more help and support available for physical illness than there is for mental illness.

Many of us at some stage in our lives will struggle with our mental health for a number of different reasons. Suicide within N.Ireland and particularly within County Fermanagh has become an increasing epidemic over the last decade. It is believed that the suicide rate within Fermanagh is atleast four times the national average.

In a bid to support those with mental health problems, Laura Maguire, Bethany Frempong and I are taking part in a Tough Mudder event on Saturday 21st July in County Meath. This event will consist of a 5 mile obstacle course designed to test physical strength and mental grit.

By donating and hopefully helping us to raise a substantial amount of money we will be able to contribute to organisations and charities that help and support those who are struggling with their mental health.

Sadly, on 17th December 2016 we lost our friend Shauna Reilly to suicide. Unfortunately Shauna suffered with her mental health from a young age. It was clear that Shauna needed help but suitable support wasn't available. Shauna was a bright soul who was extremely intelligent, caring and bubbly. As if losing Shauna wasn't devastating enough, Shauna's sister Michelle also lost her life to suicide just seven weeks later. Suicide doesn't just affect the victim, it affects all the family, friends and community who are left to deal with the extreme darkness and sense of loss.

Therefore please help us by donating money which we can give to the following charities which will hopefully be able to help others in the future. Enough people have been affected by suicide so let's prevent it from taking control of other people's lives. We have chosen the following charities to donate the money to with the help of Shauna and Michelle's sister Emma.

The Oak living centre which has many programmes that are designed to positively impact the mental health of the Erne East area, and beyond. Programs such as, "Mood Matters" which is a workshop around increasing knowledge and understanding of positive mental health and depression, aiming to reduce the stigma attached to mental health. Or SOLOS (Survivors of Loved Ones to Suicide) a support group for family and friends of those bereaved by suicide.

We are also including The Aisling centre which is well known within County Fermanagh. It is dedicated to the promotion of positive mental health and emotional wellbeing. It has a team of qualified therapists and runs workshops and support groups.
