    Story

    In memory of George Parfitt

George Parfitt was born in Trinidad in 1939 but lived in England from 1954, where he studied at the University of Bristol. He spent most of his working life as Lecturer and, later, Reader in English Literature at the University of Nottingham. He published widely, mainly on seventeenth-century literature and on First World War poetry and fiction, He was also a published poet and the father of five children. He died in Birmingham, aged 78, on 17th August 2018.

    The Grenada Community Library

Although resident most of his life in the UK, George remained a proud Trinidadian. During his retirement he wrote about his early life in Trinidad, and about Caribbean literature and culture, in "Being Anglo-Caribbean ". Having built up a large collection of books about the Caribbean, he was delighted to be able to donate his books to the Grenada Community Library. Following the progress of his boxes of books on their long journey last year from Nottinghamshire to Birmingham, and then on to London and by ship to Grenada, gave him great pleasure.

George's family would like to invite donations in his memory to support the further development of the library. Grenada's former library was devastated by hurricane and there was no library provision on the island for several years. An enthusiastic and energetic band of volunteers established a youth library and a building has now been donated by a generous benefactor. George's books provide a wider selection for older readers as well as research materials. Many events are organized to promote the love of books. See their Facebook and Instagram pages for more information, including videos of the launch party for the George Parfitt Collection.

    Thank you...

...for taking the trouble to read this. Your donation will help to sustain and develop the library, bringing the joy of books, stories, poetry, history and literature to generations to come.

Amazing news! The Library is collaborating with Grenada radio to broadcast a weekly quotation from the books in George's collection. This will start in September as 'The Caribbean Literature quote of the week', and will be a snippet from a book from the collection followed by a message that the book is available at the Grenada Community Library in the George Parfitt Caribbean Collection. Thanks to Oonya Kempadoo and all her library and book-loving friends for coming up with such a great idea and making it possible!

A wonderful way to ensure that George's love of books and desire to share that love goes on through the years, and to celebrate the West Indian heritage that meant so much to him. A lovely man.
