Iʼve raised £880 to Buy a 'Mattress for Christmas' for each of my children at Ulamba Children's Home, Siaya, Kenya

Funded on Wednesday, 7th February 2018

Don't have time to donate right now?

    Story

I have been working with Ulamba Children's Home since early 2017. Through very generous donations I have managed to provide the children with bed nets and a blanket each. They now have soap, toothbrushes, books, pencils, some board games and the famous pool which I've posted many photos of the young boys enjoying a swim!

The funds contributed have also fed the children. I helped to stock the cupboards with basics. The day they had Weetabix for breakfast the teacher called Sharon to ask who Hannah was as they were raving about how I brought them cereal!

We also had some special meals including chicken, fish, potatoes, cabbage and onions. Some of the children had never eaten fish in their lives.

I spoke to Sharon the manager at Ulamba and asked what I could provide for the children this Christmas. They get a token gift from their families if possible, or from the Charity - Moving Mountains Foundation. Sharon advised they really need mattresses and school uniforms.

Its unlikely I will be visiting Ulamba before Christmas, I have uniforms to take on my next trip but if anyone has a shipping option they can share that would be great.

Sleep is so important to young children. Some children have threadbare mattresses with lots of holes, many don't have on at all. They are already so disadvantaged in life, helping them get a good nights sleep and an education is crucial to helping them improve their lives in the future.

An average quality mattress costs between £25 - £50 (there are cheaper options but they won't last 12 months). I'd appreciate your help in trying to buy one for each child. Approx. £30 x 30 children.

No contribution is too small. I can't imagine the look on the children's faces when a truck turns up piled high with mattresses.

Mission mattress was a success! I was at Ulamba the day the truck arrived. We dragged all the old disgusting excuses for mattresses outside and the kids wrote their names on their brand new mattresses and made there beds with sheets, blankets and mosquito nets which I’d sourced on previous visits. I’m so proud of the achievement and couldn’t have made this happen without everyone’s generosity and support. The photos speak 1000 words. I’ve uploaded them to FB! Thank you xx

Project mattress is still ongoing....... I couldn’t source them in time for Christmas. All the children went to family or extended family for Christmas, bar my favourite 7 little boys that have no family or relates. I spoiled them on my visit in December with chocolates and a fed them up on rice and chicken! We made loads of Christmas glittery cards, decorated the tree with Christmas baubles and watched a superhero movie! I’m heading to Kenya in March, I’m sure we will have the kids comfy in new beds by then. Thank you for all your support x

We are still sourcing mattresses but in a new development I will be heading to Kenya on Friday for work. I am taking bedding, Christmas treats and a DVD player I’ve bought the kids for Christmas. Thank you all for your support. Hopefully I will get to visit the children. It depends how quickly the riots go on for post inauguration, which was today. Pray for peace and I’ll be able to make glittery Christmas cards with the kids on Sunday!
