Story
This summer, 2017, I am hoping to offer my services as a volunteer for the charity ‘United through Sport’. The charity aims to work with children from disadvantaged backgrounds with a view to use the power of sport to improve education, raise health awareness and build life skills on a global level across South America, Africa, Asia and Europe.
I have played a variety of sport from early childhood and have enjoyed every moment. At this stage in my life, as a student, I would like to pass on this enjoyment to other youngsters, particularly those who do not have the same opportunities that were available to me throughout my school years. In South Africa, sports is not on the curriculum so children do not get the opportunity to play sport or learn about different sports and the associated health and well being benefits.
My intention, therefore, is to join the volunteer team through Camp South Africa for five weeks over the Summer Break from University. I will be coaching various sports activities to different age groups of children in schools in Port Elizabeth as well as supporting their learning of English.
To do this, I need to raise a minimum of £500 which will go directly to the charity itself to provide sports coaching and equipment in schools. Additionally, I am fundraising to raise some money towards the cost of getting to South Africa as I have to pay my own traveling costs which are beyond my student loan budget.
I realise that there are many charities doing valuable work at home and abroad, all requesting financial support from the public. However, I would be very appreciative of any donations that you could offer me towards my first fundraising venture in bringing the wonderful benefits of sports and exercise to others in the world.
With gratitude
