Story
The favela Santa Marta, famous for being the setting of Michael Jackson’s clip of "They Don’t Care About Us », is located on the steep hill of Dona Marta in Rio de Janeiro. In 2008 , Santa Marta has become Rio's first pacified favela, occupied by a Pacifying Police Unit. Each year in January, a local NGO called Grupo Eco organises a summer camp to take local children out of the favela during their summer holidays. This holiday camp is entirely funded by donations. Led by community activist Itamar Silva ( https://www.ashoka.org/en/fellow/itamar-silva), Grupo Eco has provided activities for favela youth for over 15 years. Their activities include a theatre group, a computer school, leisure and sports activities, research initiatives to preserve the favela's history, collaborations with other favela communities, movements to defend human rights against police and drug-related violence. Since 2017, I have been part of a team of researchers collaborating with a the group ECO as part of the EU-funded Co-Creation Project : https://co-creation-network.org. We are planning to return to Rio de Janeiro for more collaborative work in January 2019. Your donation would help us fund a day of holiday for 250 children with a museum visit. Many thanks for your help!
