My brother (Jason) and I are running the Dublin Marathon (26.2 miles) on the 29th October 2017 to raise money for the Alzheimers Society of Ireland. All money raised will go directly to the Monaghan Home Care service (for those of you who don't know where Monaghan is - it is my home town). We decided to partake in this crazy event in memory of our Granny - Ethel Wylie. Sadly she passed away in June 2016 and was diagnosed with dementia many years before. Dementia is an umbrella term including Alzheimers Disease, Vascular Dementia and Lewy body dementia to name a few which all cause damage to our brain. This damage affects memory, thinking, language and our ability to perform everyday tasks. In Granny's case it was a slow progression but gradually over the years we noticed more changes until she required 24/7 care. This was provided by family and the Monaghan Home Care service. This service provided excellent support to both our family and to Granny. Our target is to raise at least £260 (£10 per mile).  £9/ €10 can give an exhausted carer a break £22/ €25 provides one hour of musical activities £45/ €50 can provide two hours of home care. £90/ €100 provides a half day of day care Granny was the most caring, thoughtful and kindest person, always putting others before herself and only she could motivate us to train as hard as we have for the past few months.
