Kotu Silo is a particularly poor neighbourhood in The Gambia. Over 14 years of visiting this area years of regularly, I got to know many children there and through these children I became acquainted with their families, their living circumstances etc. I began helping one or two families from my own pocket - putting on a new corrugate roof; cement rendering mud walls; concreting mud floors etc. Then I had the idea of
asking friends and family to contribute so I could do more to help and so Kotu Kids was born in 2009.
for the last 8 years we have continued to help these families, our beneficiaries gradually growing. The main aim is to improve the health and longevity of the children by providing healthier home surroundings which entails refurbishment; providing mosquito protection, mattresses and bedding,rat proof storage for rice and clothes; medical supplies and family planning. We also help by paying or part paying the rent for several of the most vulnerable families and donating essentials such as rice. Some individuals have been supported in setting up small businesses.
One project involves training teenagers from this background in the use of computers.
We also support a local Nursery and Infants school at Erinjang, aiming to improve facilities.
