Story
"Education is the great engine of personal development. It is through education that the daughter of a peasant can become a doctor, that the son of a mineworker can become the head of the mine, that a child of farmworkers can become the president of a great nation. It is what we make out of what we have, not what we are given, that separates one person from another." - Nelson Madela
Chlöe McBarnett, aged 9, is planning to walk 12 miles on 15 July 2017 to raise funds to buy books for school children in Malawi.
The problems in Malawi's schools are huge. Everything is lacking - appropriate classrooms, equipment, teaching materials and well-educated teachers.
This project is set to tackle two key issues for the benefit of 120 teachers and 3,600 pupils from 9 primary schools.
The Teacher's Development Centre (TDC) in Lasangazi, Malawi is a mixture of library and further education for centre for teachers. However, it neither has textbooks or teaching materials available for its users.
With the support of a UK charity called International Project Aid (IPA), Chlöe's sponsored walk will provide funding so that the children can benefit from using materials we take for granted, which will provide rich and interesting lessons from knowledgeable and prepared teachers.

7 years agoThank you to everyone that helped Chloe raise £1,350! It was a grey, wet day, but the walk was actually far easier that we all expected! Being in the Chilterns, there were some really steep hills but they were within the first 5 miles. Chloe received some lovely words of encouragement before the walk, including a text from the charity (the IPA) in Malawi which really spurred her on. Thank you once again, this is going to make a massive difference to a lot of children's lives and we couldn't have raised so much without you! :-)

7 years agoWe're not two weeks into our fundraising campaign and Chlöe has already raised £525! Chlöe's original target was £500 and so she's really pleased that this goal has been achieved. Over the next three months we're going to stretch the target to £1,000 in order to maximise the benefit for the 3,600 children in Malawi. Thank you once again for your kind donation, because without your contribution we couldn't make it happen!
