    Story

I am 18 years old and currently studying the first year of my degree - Developmental Psychology - at the University of East Anglia. And...I will be journeying to Uganda to build a playground for children with the East African Playground's project team!

I was approached by one of the project's representatives whilst I was walking to a lecture and after hearing about the opportunity could not stop thinking about how much of a difference the volunteers help makes to these children's lives and I wanted to be a part of it.

On my trip - from the 11th August until the 25th of August 2018 - I will be designing and building a playground for the children that will encompass the essence of their community and play culture, alongside a build team and other volunteers.

£800 of the money raised goes straight to the East African Playground Project which will aid them in continuing their amazing work for the Children and communities across East Africa. Then 1,400 goes toward my flights, vaccinations, visas and insurance that will all help to me getting there! I have to have hit my target by the 15th of May!

The thoughts behind the project is that "Play is the universal language of a child". It is a child's universal right to play. Play has been shown to bring many benefits to children such as social skills as well as cognitive abilities.

Unfortunately, across East Africa, children spend their spare time searching for work rather than playing. The few play facilities that do exist for children are often unsafe or poor quality. The large class sizes and lack of facilities mean that a system of rote teaching is used, which means that children are limited in self-expression and creativity.

Examples of what you can fund with a donation are...

£10 - builds a toy giraffe for the children of a community to play with

£15 - builds a motorbike out of tires, allowing kids to engage their creativity in role play scenario's

£20 - funds safety equipment for a disadvantaged young adult, helping them to be safe as they start their meaningful employment with East African Playground's

£50 - builds a table with space for board games such as checkers or snakes and ladders!

Therefore, all the money raised will be greatly appreciated first and foremost by the children as well as the project and myself.

I will keep updates on the page of any upcoming fundraising events I will be doing! If you have any questions then please do not hesitate to contact.

Please help me to fundraise by giving what you can - any donation will mean a lot.

I am fortunate enough to be going to New York tomorrow, all the way up until Christmas Eve with my family. Whilst in New York I plan to complete a gymnastics move in front of at least 7 different New York Attractions. ALSO if you do donate then you can suggest another place you would like to see me do the splits and I will try my best to do so!!! Thank you all, please get everyone you know involved in my Christmassy New York Festivities!
