Story
How many martial artists does it take to build a Christmas Grotto?
Honestly, we don't know. But we plan to find out.
I'm Rich, a guy who has been training martial arts in Winsford for around 20 years. Currently, I train at the Modern Kenpo Karate Association under Senior Master Ted Clare. As martial artists, we believe in enriching individuals young and old, embuing them with a sense of integrity and responsibility. Responsibilty extends well beyond the walls of the Dojo, out into our wider community. When it came to the attention of Ted that Winsford Cross Shopping Centre would be without a Santa's Grotto this year, he took it upon himself to make absolutely sure that this happened. And by himself, I mean the MKKA.
Together we've committed ourselves to put some time, money and effort into the community to enliven and enrich our town during the festive season. The key goal here is to create a small piece of Christmas magic for local children to engage with.
We want them to have fond memories of their home town. We want parents to be able to see their kids really enjoying a fantastic experience. We want people to be able to take pride in where they live and the people with whom they share it.
Unfortunately, we can't do this alone. So we're asking Winsfordians (or literally anyone) to step up and put whatever you can down to help us out. We're looking for about £500 to buy up some building materials and decorations. The timescale is pretty short, as Christmas is rapidly approaching - we'd appreciate every penny we receive in favour of this.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read this. We're trying to do something for the kids, the parents and the community - we'd be proud to say that we did it with your help.

7 years agoConstruction and outfitting of the grotto is compete! I'll be posting a video this weekend (hopefully) showing you what your money enabled us to make. Please note that, as mentioned previously, any further money raised will go to buying gifts for our visitors. During the time that the grotto is open, we'll also be raising money for St Luke's Hospice, so if you're not tired of giving please consider donating. Finally, thank you for all of the monetary support and kind words throughout this project - we are proud to be a part of this.

7 years agoSo there you have it, we've smashed our goal. I've also pushed hard on the build and now we're close to being done. In the interest of full disclosure, I managed to come in more or less on budget meaning that we're at a surplus of funding. With the build nearing completion, we've agreed that any and all donations received beyond this point will be used to buy small gifts for the visiting children - literally every pound will be spent improving the experience for the kids. Once again thank you so much, we would be nowhere without your support.

The morality of martial arts is that if you have the ability to affect change for the better, you also have the responsibility to do so. Winsford has provided us with great memories training with good people - this is a massive opportunity to give more to the town and community.
