Story
Nick Hayes B.1972 - D.2021
This is a story of our son, Nick taught English and Film for 22 years in Kent Secondary schools. He spent his time nurturing the students writing but always had ambitions to write himself. Recently he left teaching to work as a youth worker. With more time to himself, he developed his blog, show casing his poetry and prose. He enjoyed participating in local spoken word events. Nick's first experience of mental illness was when he was 25 and led to a diagnosis of bipolar disease. In 2016, following severe stress at work, he experienced a breakdown and spent two weeks in hospital.
Nick battled with his bipolar and sadly died from suicide in April 2021.
Nick leaves behind his wife and two children, his parents, two brothers and extended family; as well as many friends.
Nick will not be forgotten and lives on in the memory of all who had the privilege of knowing him

Very sorry to read about Nick's passing. A fellow member of Whitstable Writers Group he stands out in my mind as a gentle thoughtful pleasant person. What a tragic loss.

Nick was a massive inspiration to so many, and I am glad to have known him as my teacher. I am a teacher now, and I know the impact he had on me will stay with me forever. Here's to wonderful man.

Nick was such a great colleague at Barton Court. Always smiling, so full of wit and such a dedicated teacher. I loved working with him; he would always lift my spirits. We send our love to you all. xx
