Story
Jayanthi and I came across a Sri Lankan charity raising funds to help children from poor families.
We assisted them by donating to a local school by installing fans and lights in their main hall. The hall would typically house several hundred children. During hot days (which is typical in Sri Lanka) not having a fan is extremely difficult - The heat index can reach in the 40's Centrigrade. Also during rainy days the hall would be too dark for students to read. So paying for all the parts and the electrician's work addressed their needs.
We are crowd-funding for Rashmi Child Development Foundation in the UK in order to promote their work. It is difficult to raise funds by any other procedure overseas.
Raising funds from Sri Lankans in rural areas is not impossible but very difficult. Although most families will part with a few rupees, even if they are poor themselves, this does not go a long way.
If you can suggest alternate means of raising funds, please let us know.
Thanks,
Frank and Jayanthi

6 years agoWe wish to thank heartily my sister Eileen Peacock, my friend Andrew Pritchard and my generous uncle Peter Holding for their donations amounting to £110. Many of these families have a rice paddy field where they try to eke out a livelihood. One family in particular is so poor that their father helps the monk at our local monastery and obtains free meals for his assistance. Many thanks to Eileen, Andrew and Peter.

6 years agoThe Western New Year is the start of the school year for children in Sri Lanka. Many families need to purchase many different items at this time for their children who are attending school. Jayanthi visited many families in our local community/village and enquired from them of their needs in this regard. We purchased a lot of stationery items, water paint colours, a melodica, many drawing books, lunch boxes, water bottles and shoes for 10 children from 9 poor families in our village.
