Story
The team at Redleaf have set themselves the ultimate challenge to raise money for Carter’s New Legs by taking part in the FULL 12 mile London obstacle course this April.
Back in summer 2017 Marteen and her family received the news from The Great Ormond Street Hospital that her nephew Carter who was born with Cerebral Palsy (Spastic Diplegia) was eligible to undergo life changing SDR surgery. This surgery would enable him to walk and stand unaided and avoid a life bound to a wheelchair by the age of 10.
The family gave themselves a year to raise the £50,000 needed to fund the surgery so Marteen set a date in the future that enabled her to have time to train and mentally prepare herself for the gruesome obstacles of Tough Mudder. But to everyone’s surprise, with the help of the public’s generosity they managed to raise the full amount within a few months and Carter was booked in for surgery in January 2018. The operation was a major success and Carter is now back at school and having his daily physiotherapy sessions learning to walk all by himself!
So, you may be wondering, why are we still fundraising? We are still fundraising as Carter will need private physiotherapy daily for the first year and then 3 times a week thereafter for the rest of his life and sadly it is not cheap. While speaking to her sister in law one evening Marteen found that a lot of families who’s children previously had the same surgery were starting to run out of money for the much needed physiotherapy as they hadn’t anticipated the aftercare during their fundraising. So Marteen shifted her goal to raise enough money to see Carter through his remaining primary school years and have his physiotherapy sorted.
Marteen announced her news at a staff meeting at Redleaf and to her surprise left the room with a team of Redleafer’s that were willing to take part in the 12 mile obstacle course with her. Emma, Robin, Guy, Simone, Jose, Lizzie, Ella, and Fiona and they’re all excited whilst totally petrified!
The Redleaf team are (not-so) ready to take on the mighty challenge and raise money, so please donate and spread the word for #CartersNewLegs
