At 4 weeks old our nephew Reggie was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis, 1 in 25 of us carry the faulty gene (usually without even knowing it) and there are about 100,000 people living with CF worldwide so that makes him pretty special! CF is a genetic condition, which means people with CF are born with it and will never stop having it. Everyone has mucus in their bodies, but people with CF have thicker, stickier mucus. This can be a problem for the lungs and digestive systems of people with CF – the sticky mucus can build up and cause lung infections and digestive problems.

The latest report from the UK CF trust found that half of people born with cystic fibrosis in 2017 would live to at least 47, there is currently no cure for CF. There has however been significant advancements in CF care and including new drug treatments in recent years. One of the daily treatments (along with all those meds) is staying active and getting those lungs working so we will be walking 40km on June 26th as Reggie's Ramblers. Reggie will kick us off with a 6.5km trike ride in Australia then the UK Ramblers will do 40km across the Brecon Beacons and finally the Canadian Ramblers will finish the day with a 40km Alberta hike.

The funds raised will be split with 50% going to the UK CF Trust to support their vital work to ensure a future where kids like Reggie can live a life unlimited and the remaining 50% will go towards purchasing a 'Jiggle Vest' for Reggie. The vest is is a high frequency chest wall oscillation vest that will help Reggie cough up all that mucus way more effectively. It enhances lung secrections which ultimately lowers his chances of infection and keeps his lungs healthier and working for longer. These vests cost on average $13,000 and he will be able to use a vest from about the age of two!
