Story
Our very dear friend and respected colleague, Richard Cantor passed away this month after an incredible fight against the cancer that was supposed to finish him off five years ago. Typically for him, he refused to have his life disrupted by this and set out to prove he knew better, which of course, he did.
Richard's partner, Lynette has for many years been an active supporter of a school for poor kids in a village in The Gambia - "Seedlings School". Richard too gave support to the school and saw to the further education of particular kids who attended there.
Knowing that Richard was reaching the end of his long fight, we asked whether he might like us, his friends, to help sponsor a child through their six year education at the school as a memorial to him and his friendships. When presented with this, Richard's eyes lit up - he thought it was a lovely idea.
The school has about 110 kids all of whom are sponsored by individual contributors such as us. In broad terms, it costs £1,200 to sponsor one (named) child for the whole six years. Between us all we should be able to sponsor one (or even more) kids in memory of Richard. It would keep his memory alive in the best possible way because it really would transform the life of a child in Africa.

7 years agoWell, we have exceeded our target by a good margin and I will be closing our page this Sunday, the 18th March. If you would like to make a last minute donation or a top-up please feel free, but do it before Sunday! On behalf of Lynette and the School, and of course, Richard - THANK YOU! If you are able to allow the school to claim Gift Aid relief (it adds another 25% to your donation), just email me (jmdennison@aol.com) and I will send you a simple form to complete and return. My Best Regards John

7 years agoHello to all of Richard’s friends. Sarah and I are in The Gambia (with Lynette) to see the school and if I am honest to get away from the snow in UK (is it safe to come back yet?). We were made very welcome by the headmaster, staff and kids at Seedlings. Inside the school grounds it is a safe environment and a sea of smiling faces on happy kids - Just what we wanted to see. The whole school sang to us and some did a very impressive dance routine. Thank you, kids. It is a very worthwhile cause! John

7 years agoYou are still contributing and I am starting to wonder whether we can raise enoughto sponsor a third child for Richard. I am getting a lot of signed forms back that will allow the school to reclaim another 25% of donations and this might just be enough, so once again, THANK YOU. I will be visiting Seedlings School next month and will keep you all in the loop as to our progress. John

The Gambia
I have been a colleague of Richard's for over thirty years but over the last four have worked alongside him and grew to know him as a friend. His sharp wit, always delivered with a twinkle in his eye never deserted him throughout his illness, which he just ignored.
