Story
Roo is a little man on a big mission.
Not one – but two – rare conditions are making life tricky for Roo and Team Williams.
Haemophilia is a condition that affects the blood's ability to clot in the normal way. Each day, he needs to ‘top up’ his levels by being given an infusion by Han & Gaz through a line inserted in his chest, as well as taking extra care to avoid bleeding & bruising. This is tricky when you are a busy 3 year old with lots to do. Roo made brilliant progress before developing Chronic Intestinal Pseudo-obstruction (CIP). This is an even-more-rare condition which means his bowel does not work in the normal way, making it difficult to grow & causing periods of painful tummy
swelling. Roo has spent a lot of time on Island Ward at the Children's Hospital for Wales. The treatment, along with medicine to help the bowel move better– gives all the nutrition he needs direct into his bloodstream in an infusion overnight – a process called TPN, total parenteral nutrition.
Han & Gaz are learning all the care, procedures & skills that Roo will need to stay well. They've learned all these skills during the covid pandemic with apparent ease and skill that astounds us all. They’ve become super experts in a host of high-tech medical speak & procedures – infusions, line hacks, TPN, sterile procedures, whilst being the best parents to Roo & Bella, working, managing life, family & having to advocate for their team at every turn.
There's currently no cure for haemophilia or CIP, meaning Roo needs all our help to have the best life possible living with both conditions.
It's time to show them how much they mean to us all, & to raise awareness of the impact rare disease has on kids like Roo.
We're raising money for:
Digitally temp. controlled cool box that plugs into the car so Roo can travel with TPN overnight & a pull along to support walking.
Noah's Ark - for families needing specialist medical care across Wales.
PORT (pseudo obstruction research trust).
