    Story

As a foster child I moved schools a lot when I was younger. So I didn’t know about the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award until I started working as an apprentice at Amey.

The DofE would have been perfect for me when I was growing up. Especially the opportunity to get away for five days, go hiking, just to get away from everything, but still feeling ‘looked after’ would have been amazing.

Open to 14-24 year olds, I’m too old to do it now. So instead I’ve decided to take on a DofE Challenge: volunteering for two weeks with the Masai Community in Kenya.

It’s definitely going to be a challenging two weeks! I’ll be adjusting to a basic way of living, hiking two hours a day for water, having to share a communal toilet with the rest of the villagers, and spending two weeks away from my daughter, Amelia.

Donating on this page will help more young people across the

UK benefit from the life-changing DofE Award – including those who grow up in care, like I did. I want to help young people get the opportunity in life I missed out on – help them build their resilience and self-confidence, so they can navigate life’s challenges and develop friendships and skills for life.

To donate to the Masai community for food, materials and

construction materials please see my other donation page: https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/sarah-stevenson-1?utm_term=vQP5zAr2V

I chose the Maasai as the community could truly benefit from what I have to offer using the experienced gained from my professional career, University and College studies along with my own upbringing in care.
