Story
During my recent trip to Poland, my friend and I visited an orphanage in Skorogoszcz, small village near Wroclaw - helping raking the leaves in the yard, then drinking tea and playing "Monopoly" with the children. What we noticed was that their living room is poorly equipped (old furnishings, empty walls, tv, abacus and just few books on the shelf) and the "Monopoly" is the only game children have to play.
Sitting there with them, looking on their smiley cheeks and great enthusiasm they had while we were playing, I thought - how wonderful would be to make a surprise for them this Christmas and buy other board games and amenities. All just to help them spend such a quality time like this more often, bring a bit more happiness and warm, family atmosphere to their lives.
Orphanage in Skorogoszcz was established in 1952, provides care and education for up to 30 children. The village is located around 65 km from Wroclaw and inhabited by app.1,200 people. It's public funded like other orphanages in Poland but the financial support is not as generous as in other similar entities located in more populated urban areas.
I've already drafted a list of several board games and contacted the shop which will provide the items directly to the orphanage. The target sum covers the price of all chosen games but if we manage to collect a bit more, we would be able to fund other gifts for children, i.e. a big world map to place on the wall, books, stationery, jigsaw puzzles and other equipment.
By setting up this fundraising page, I would like to invite you to make this happen. Every donation will be much appreciated. Currently I'm not living near to the Orphanage but I will do my best to provide you regular updates and give full transparency on how the donations are spent. Let's do something magical this Christmas!

8 years agoMassive "THANK YOU!" for all who contributed, the collection is now over and we managed to raise: £955 (Justgiving) + £113 (Polish Bake-off) + £30 (Other) = £1,098 in total. It's more 4 (!) times more than the targeted sum of £250. Being completely honest I'm extremely amazed by all of you as I've never expected we will meet so many kind, generous and helpful people on the way. Stay with me on JustGiving page for a bit longer to see what memories we are now creating for these kids, you are now a great part of this!

8 years agoAs planned, a big world map poster (£16.71) is now hanging in the Study Room filling out nicely an empty space on the wall. This is the final day for the money collection on JustGiving so - if you have ever planned to contribute or ask someone to do so, please do it today. After the collection is over, I will summarize how much money we have managed to collect (online & offline) and - of course - keep providing regular updates on how it's being used. Have a nice evening all!

8 years agoWe bought 19 games for £136.15 in total (after consulting the list with director). All games have arrived this week and - what's apparent - kids didn't allow to keep them in the delivery box for too long :). Here they're figuring out how to play "The Great Turtle Race", where players are competing against each other to reach a leaf salad. Yes, I also hope they will allow the girl in pink to play at some point, they seem to be way too absorbed by the game ;). Seeing them on this photo totally warms my heart, hope yours too.

8 years agoLadies & Gents, it’s now official that the grand premiere of the Christmas tree in the orphanage in Skorogoszcz will take on the 14th Dec. The crew of professional decorators (28 children & few older supporters) is already working on the top-class design following current tree fashion trends. Our sources say it’s going to be a living tree and that the highest class decorations are already in place (all shatterproof to keep them for longer & avoid breaking any of these beauties in the Crimbo rush). Photo relation from this great event soon :).

"Helping a person will not necessarily change the world, but it will change the world for that person". Living my life, visiting places and meeting people, I became aware of a power we all have to make a difference to others lives and how important it is not to forget about it.
