Story
Going the EXTRA mile so that THEY CAN!
The children of Abercynon with autistic spectrum disorder NEED a new mini bus, so PLEASE let´s get together and make it happen!
I am fortunate to know one of the pupils of the learning support class, Evan Harris who is the son of one my best friends. Evan´s magical mind amazes me and I believe there lies big things in the future for him, therefore if WE can make a difference to help Evan and the other children in his class to develop their communication skills by going out into the community and attending the numerous weekly activities which they rely heavily on their mini bus for then we certainly WILL be making a difference to these young people´s lives!
My Challenge
Firstly, allow me to introduce myself, my name is Steve and I grew up in Abercynon, South Wales and have lived in Marbella since the year 2000. I would like to confirm that I am not an athlete nor am I an advanced/experienced cyclist and what I am about to attempt is way above my comfort zone!
On Sunday the 22nd April, along with 4 other of my biking mates, I will be attempting to climb the OUKA MONSTER (more info here: www.marrakech-atlas-etape.com ) which is a race starting in Marrakech and then cycling up to the ski resort of Oukaimeden at the top of the Atlas mountains (2,624m). The race is 156kms long, with an 80kms climb up 2,129 metres of altitude gain with no flats or restbite. If any of you are familiar with the stages of the Tour de France, then it’s bigger than Mount Ventoux, Tourmalet and Galibier!
Below is a comment taken from one of last year´s riders:
“It turned out that there had been quite a few cases of hypothermia and even hospitalisations for the least fortunate. The guys in the minibus that passed by and many others, had been rescued off the mountain. I still don’t know my exact finishing position but of those who set out on the full 156km distance less than 20 finished.¨
GULP!....... But not to fear…. last year 20 people finished it which means IT IS POSSIBLE!!
Please support this great cause with any amount you can. The staff, pupils and families of the support class will greatly appreciate it!
** I understand that the target of £10,500 may seem a little high however this is the cost to part exchange their existing dilapidated minibus (more details in blog below). Should this target not be reached by the end of April, then I will continue with more challenges throughout the year until it is reached!**

6 years agoThey made contact with the head of the unit Mrs. Pritchard who has been working tirelessly with them since the beginning of the summer and has now resulted in the Fairwood Trust generously making up the rest of the monies needed AND MORE! This means that the support class will take full ownership (no need for the sunshine variety charity’s support) of their very own 64-reg plate 17-seater minibus, with just 20,000 miles on the clock, which will last them for many years to come! A photo will be posted in early 2019! (POST 2 OF 3)

6 years agoIt´s been a while since the last update however it is with GREAT pleasure to announce to you all, that the children of the Abercynon learning support class WILL take delivery of their new minibus at the beginning of school term 2019!!! Whilst the Ouka monster fundraising climb in Africa was shy of the initial target, it was the exposure and awareness that it generated, which lead to our just giving page catching the eye of charitable Fairwood Trust.
