    Story

St. Georges walk is a challenge combining exercise in the great outdoors with raising money for four wonderful charities; RNLI, Help for Heroes, Children in Need and The Scouts.

Getting active and having space away from devices is really valuable for everyone’s physical and mental health, especially after the last few years, so as well as raising valuable funds, we all benefit personally from the experience.

A number of charities have struggled with their normal fundraising activities being prevented due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the current squeeze on people's income. This event supports four wonderful charities which affect people positively across the whole of the UK. Help For Heroes supporting ex-service men and women, the Royal National Lifeboat Institute (RNLI) supporting the volunteers who save so many lives around the coast each year, BBC Children in Need helping the most vulnerable young people across the UK and the Scout Association who help people to develop life skills and experiences to help them be the best they can be and achieve their full potential in life.

All of these charities were supported by my father, Barry Bond, during his life. He was a proud British and Englishman and he passed away in 2020 on Saint Georges day, the 23rd of April. It seemed fitting to honour him as a tribute to found an event on St George’s Day to raise money for charities that were close to his heart.

The first walk in 2021 was the coastal path around the Gower Peninsular in South Wales, which was completed solo due to COVID restrictions, so will be repeated together in 2022. The Gower peninsula was the first area of outstanding natural beauty ever to be safeguarded in the UK (https://www.visitswanseabay.com/destinations/gower-peninsula/).

Barry always said he would prefer to see all of the amazing parts of the United Kingdom before travelling abroad to see the other wonderful parts of the world. With this in mind, the ethos around St. Georges walk is to celebrate some of the best areas of natural beauty around the UK.

It is of course important that everyone who wishes to support this event and participate is responsible and follows all current COVID-19 guidelines in terms of both travelling and social distancing (latest guidance). In addition to this, it is important to plan and prepare for your walk as the great British weather can be very changeable and we all need to be safe. Guidance posted on the Facebook page for reference too.
