Our Story.

Our journey began on 6th February 2018. Our 3 year old little girl Bede had not been feeling well. We presumed she was anemic when our doctor referred us straight to the local hospital. After a few hours there we were told our little girls blood factory wasn't working properly and would need investigating at the Great North Children's hospital. We were told one of the likely causes of this could be Leukaemia. Nothing could have prepared us for this.

An ambulance was called and we were rushed to the RVI in Newcastle.
Once there, we were taken into Children's A & E and seen by a doctor. Bede was then given her first of many blood and platelet transfusions. Having given blood in the past it really hit home just how important blood donation is. Bede had become very weak but within minutes of receiving blood she started to become her usual fiesty self, something we never thought we would be so relieved to see! I didn't leave her side that night, and haven't since! The next afternoon our worst fears were confirmed. Our daughter was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia.

Since diagnosis our lives have taken a different turn. We now have regular hospital visits and stays, administer treatment at home, keep a constant check on her temperature and Bede misses out on a lot of things healthy 3 year olds do. This will continue for 2 years.

The team at the RVI in particular wards 4 and 14, are amazing and for this reason we want to give something back. We'd also like to help anyone else that has supported us along the way.

On the 7th of February, the day of Bede's diagnosis I received an email to confirm I had been given a place in the Great North Run. So on the 9th of September I will be running for team BD. * Completed*
