Story
Change for Smiles - Raiding the penny jar campaign!
I am launching a Just Giving campaign to raise £50,000 from the penny jars of the readers of this campaign for UDAYAN, a children’s residential facility for the care of leprosy patients’ children in Calcutta, India.
Background
On 25th of March 1970, My uncle James (John) Stevens MBE travelled into the slums of Calcutta and its surrounds, in a bus loaned from Mother Teresa. He rescued 11 children, to whom he promised and delivered, a better life – one with education, food, clothing, and most importantly, opportunity. James’s vision was that UDAYAN would provide the children with a place to grow up as children were meant to, free of the scourge of leprosy and its associated poverty, with the chance to learn, play and live life.
Fast forward to today and UDAYAN is home to 300 children who have been rescued from family’s who are greatly affected by leprosy. UDAYAN provides education, shelter, food and clothing. UDAYAN has changed the lives of so many people who have gone on to become working members of the community. James has devoted his entire life to these children and his work at UDAYAN.
Children's ages at UDAYAN range from 4 to 18 and have all been affected by leprosy in some way. They eventually leave UDAYAN’s doors with the education and the self-confidence needed to be productive members of society.
Current funding is running out. Please help me in this worthy childrens cause. They have had a tough start in life and with our assistance we can help them become strong confident people, who will be able to start affecting change in their own communities. No matter the size of your donation to this campaign it will make a difference. My appeal to readers is to please hunt out the penny jar that most homes have and let me have the contents so that we can put it to good use to transform the lives of these children.
Thank you, please share on social media .. Phil
