    Story

Westhouses Residents Action Group are trying to create a village War Memorial in time for the centenary of the end of the First World War, next November. Our village is the only one in the Parish without a dedicated memorial, despite losing a large proportion of it's eligible men in the First World War. After the Second World War the village residents bought the current playing field ( pictured ), using profits from War Bonds they had bought to fund the war effort. It was decided the field should be named the Memorial Playing Field in memory of the men from the village killed in the two World Wars and a thanksgiving for those that returned. Unfortunately though, this wasn't registered legally at the time and over the years the name sadly became forgotten. However, recently uncovered documents from the time have enabled us to restore the name. Glad that we have achieved this, the names of the men remain unrecognised, which is why we want to create a fitting memorial for their sacrifice. As we are still only a small village, we would not be able to achieve this on our own. So, we are asking for your help. Below is a list of the men killed, we are hoping to honour at last. They include two brothers, one who lied about his age to fight for his country. Most have no known grave.

    Alf Swales 31
    Thomas Brown 40
    Walter Montague 23
    George Lane 18
    Richard Phelps 21
    William Rushton 22
    Harry Wright 19
    Les Tomblin 23
    Frederick King 20
    George Till 24
    John Lane 22
    Jack Harris 20
    Walter Smith 23
    Harry Severn Age Unknown
    William Corby 28
    Ronald Dicks 29

These men have waited 100 years to be recognised and honoured for their sacrifice. Please help us put that right at last. Thank you.
