Story

Dear Friend,

On or about 15 August 2005, I will attempt to swim the English Channel two ways to raise money for St Catherine's Hospice (find out more at: www.stch.org.uk) who cared for my father during his fight with cancer. The actual date will depend on the weather conditions and the tides. The non-stop swim will set a World Record that will be endorsed by the Channel Swimming & Piloting Federation and the Guinness Book of World Records.

This is a DOUBLE channel crossing that will make me the oldest man to complete this feat of endurance. The total distance I will swim will be 42 miles in cold water. I will be allowed three minutes on the beach in France.

I have dedicated the last three years of my life to training for this swim. Whenever I feel like giving up (and I know I will), I will think of all of you who have supported me in so many special ways and this will spur me on through the dark night and into the light of the next day.

My wife, Karen, has been my greatest supporter throughout my preparation and will be on the support vessel cheering me on and feeding me carbohydrate drinks every half hour. She will have a whiteboard on the boat and will write inspirational messages for me as I swim. If you wish to have your special message displayed somewhere in the middle of the English Channel, please contact her at:
